Thank you for being a part of our RGV Music Therapy Community.
During the initial session, the therapist will conduct an evaluation to gather information and assess the client's needs. If the client appears to be a good candidate for music or recreational therapy, the therapist will recommend a treatment frequency (typically 1-2 hours per week) to help the client and family work on their goals.
Music therapists are trained to use music to help a client's emotional, cognitive, physical, and social well-being, .This means that the music therapist can help you or your child develop positive coping skills, express their emotions, improve their motor skills, and more. Music therapy goals are individualized and based on client needs.
A music therapy session will typically last between one and two hours, depending on the recommendation of the therapist. Clients may participate in active music making through playing musical instruments including guitar, piano, drums, percussion, and more. Clients can also select to engage through music listening, song discussion, song writing, and more.
Recreational therapy is the clinical use of leisure interventions to improve a client's physical, social, psychological, and cognitive health. Recreational therapy can also provide opportunities for community integration and connect clients with resources within the community.
Recreational therapists use a variety of interventions including arts and crafts, baking, cooking, games, sports, and other leisure activities. Clients can also participant in rec therapy through community outings.
