Valentine’s Day Serenatas: Spanish Songs for Music Therapy

It‘a February and themes of love are emerging! Whether we’re discussing self love or the love we have for others in our lives, the topic of Valentine‘s Day will probably be coming up naturally in our sessions over the next couple weeks.

Here in South Texas, it’s common to hear about serenatas or serenades as a way to express admiration, appreciation, and love for those around us. You may see this at restaurants or events. Some may even hire a mariachi to play a few songs for a loved one.

To prepare for the upcoming celebrations, we asked a local mariachi, Anahil, to share with us what she felt were the most requested songs for Valentine’s Day.

In music therapy, we use music that is personally and culturally significant to our clients. These are songs that can be sung or played in music therapy sessions as a way to support clients' experiences and celebrations:

Si Nos Dejan - Jose Alfredo Jimenez

Hermoso Cariño - Vicente Fernandez

Cien Años - Pedro Infante

Motivos - Vicente Fernandez

Gema - Javier Solis

These are songs that are so meaningful to our region. Connect with us on social media and follow along for more of our music therapy journey in South Texas!
